CASE STUDY DETAILS

  • Company: Regeneron Pharmaceuticals - Tarrytown, NY
  • Engineer: Vanderweil Engineering
  • Contractor: The Pike Company

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biotechnology company headquartered in Tarrytown, New York. The company was founded in 1988. Originally focused on neurotrophic factors and their regenerative capabilities (thus the name), it branched out into the study of both cytokine and tyrosine kinase receptors.

The Pike Company was selected to build a new high pressure steam plant for one of Regeneron’s manufacturing processes. The system was designed around Fulton equipment and ATI, in conjunction with B.J. Muirhead of Rochester, NY, combined to supply the plant equipment.

The original system engineering stemmed through three Vanderweil offices in Philadelphia, PA, New York City and Boston, Massachusetts and required coordinated efforts by Fulton reps in all of those territories including United Energy Products in PA, ATI in NY City and F.I. Rounds in Mass.

The system design incorporated a Fulton Engineered skid. Fulton was chosen based on the industrial grade of the product and the unparalleled 10-year warranty on the boilers based on being supplied in a factory engineered prefabricated skid configuration.

The skid supplies 125 PSI steam to Regeneron’s manufacturing process and includes three (3) Fulton Model VMP-150, 150 HP high pressure natural gas fired steam boilers, a 11,000 lb./hr. tray type deaerator, surge tank, blowdown separator, chemical feed system and water softener. A Mod Sync controller was later added for complete sequencing and control of the entire process. The burners include Siemens LMV3 control technology for optimized efficiency and control.

The entire system was commissioned by both ATI and Fulton technicians to insure specific control strategies and adaptations could be made in fine tuning the skid solution for the specific needs of the customer. ATI also provided extensive on-site training of Regeneron operating personnel.
